Al and Cal Homes and Community: My Mom Wants A New Home Does Yours?

My Mom Wants A New Home Does Yours?

My Mom  Wants A New Home, Does Yours?

I am having a nice visit with Mom yesterday and she drops the bomb.   " I want to look at some homes", she says.

Now you have to know that we have gone down this road before.   She falls in love.  Dad doesn't want to move.

So sitting at the kitchen table having a cup of tea... I say, "Mom, I love you, but I am not going to show you houses unless Dad is on board!"    "Oh, he will be", she says.

Hmmmm, I have been here before too.Moving

But is this time different?  They own a 5 bedroom, 2.5 bath home with a nice lot in a very nice neighborhood.  They are paying a ton of taxes and have more house then they need.   Why shouldn't they buy a new "Active Adult lifestyle" home?

You know what?   They should.   And, I should be the advocate for them doing so!    So, tomorrow, we will  start looking at these homes.   Mom will fall in love and Dad.   Well, Dad loves Mom.... so we will be putting their home on the market...  I think.

And so should many others.

Many of my friends folks are living in large single family homes.    Many by themselves.     Many worry about the yard or the roof or shoveling snow or raking leaves and don't have anyone to do it for them.

Why do they stay in these homes?   Maybe the task of moving is to much to think about or they don't know the value of their home in today's market or what is available to them should they choose to make the move to a maintenance free lifestyle.  Maybe they just don't know where to start!    After all it's been years and things have changed drastically even in the last 6 months for crying out loud!

Possibly they are concerned about condo fees in a new home.    They might not want to leave their memories behind.     But more than that, it might just be the task of packing up and cleaning out.    After all most have accumulated years of stuff.    Hey in my parents case, they are storing their kids things.   Isn't that silly!

All of these folks should be out enjoying themselves and not a slave by their homes and the up keep.

If your parents have too much home, talk to them about making a trade in lifestyle.   They deserve it!

Good morning, Carol Ann.....Fran and Milo have alot of communities to pick from.....it's a huge undertaking to empty a large home to fit into a smaller one.....it's major....I did it....I gave most of my stuff to the kids or to agents in the office....and I didn't store anything....I can't imagine the undertaking!!!

Posted by Barbara Todaro, "Franklin MA Homes" (RE/MAX Executive Realty ) about 7 years ago

Carol Ann:  The thought of moving/packing all the "stuff" is often the factor that keeps many older homeowners staying put.  Having you to guide your folks through the process is a big bonus...best wishes for a speedy sale and a seamless move into a smaller/easier to maintain residence for them.

Hi Josh.   Thank you.    We've been busy and are striving to keep it that way.   Back at you!

Hi Barbara.   I'm sure that is exactly what stops most people from even thinking about it.   Although their home is clutter free compared to most....it is a huge undertaking.     Let's see if they go the whole mile.      We will be looking at your listings!

Hi Anita.  I agree with you 110 percent.   The jury is still out on if they will go the whole distance.    Thanks for reading!

Sell the big house, cash in and spend the kids' inheritance.  That's the way to go Cal.  Great post.

Cal, I love this blog and am going to suggest because it echoes what many of us face these days. I went throught the same exact scenario a few years ago. Only Dad wanted to move - Mom didn't. It's worked out though, and I'm sure they are grateful to have made the decision.

Best of luck. They are lucky to have a sweet, smart and Realtor daughter to help them in the process.

Hope your computer is out of its glitch mode. :)

Hi Debb.   (Well it's working now, but I am afraid to jinx myself here, LOL)     I'm glad it worked out for your folks.    The jury is still out here.    I can't tell you how much I appreciate your kind words!!!   ( and the S)    Thank you!

Carol,

All I can say is good luck. Your parents have all of this emotional value put on their home of so many years. Sometimeste emotional value outweighs the money and practicality of moving from a big home. Hard decision for all involved. I think it makes it even more difficult since you are a Realtor. One item to throw out there it is crtainly better to move now when they have their health than wait till one or both have health issues. I know that is another difficult topic to talk about with your own parents. Like I said Good Luck.. You re a very smart lady and savvy Realtor so I am sure you will find a good path.

Carol Ann, it is so overwhelming for older folks to contemplate the thought of moving but what is better than you at their disposal to help them through the process...keep us informed!

Carol Ann, I have an elderly client that is selling the home she has been in for 50 years and the emotions are all over the place, but it is something that needs to be done to give her a better quality of life with less stress. This is familiar to the Normandin situation.

Wow, Carol Ann, what a daunting task for all of you.  The house does sound a little on the Large side for them.  My mom lives in thes same house from before I was born.  Once she put her name on the list for the assisted living condo but took it off and says she is going out feet first.  Her house is a little cape and manageable to an extent.  Good Luck with everything!

Carol Ann....not sure how I missed this the first time around but I caught it Pat's favorites.  I hope you can convince Dad to go along with Mom.  Honestly, my husband & I have this conversation all the time about how we will downsize as soon as the kids are out of the house!  We are tired of the upkeep already....well, sort of!

Posted by Christine Smith, Exclusive Buyer Agent & Attorney, Canton, MA (Buyers Brokers Only LLC - www.BuyersBrokersOnly.com) about 7 years ago

That why I was all for buying a medium size house so I would not have to upsize and downsize again. It is small enough for me and large enough for two more! It is beyond my thinking why some people buy these huge houses and not just make do with what they have!
